Kickstart doesnt discover 2400 SMU

Post by Philipshibu83 » April 23rd, 2014, 12:13 pm

I am trying to use the Kickstart with my 2400 meter for IV characterization. However Kickstart doesn't discover the 2400 SMU. I am connecting using a GPIB interface and running 64 bit Windows 7. I've already checked to see if the GPIB interface is working, the labtracer works fine with SMU. However would like to see the capability of Kickstart. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also when I try to load the plugin for the 2400 SMU I am getting the following error.

File Error -SystemJOiOException:The process cannot access the file C:\Program
Files (x86)\Keithley Instruments\KickStart\instrument
plug-ins\KZ400SmuPlugin.kipi because it is being used by another process.
at SystemiO._Error.WinlOError(1nt32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath)
at SystemiO.FileJnternalCopy(String sourceFileName, String destFileName,
Boolean overwrite)
at SystemJO.Filelnfo.CopyTo(String destFileName, Boolean overwrite)
at ToolBarModule.ToolBarCommands.ImportlnstrumentPluginAction(). Make
sure the file and path are valid.

I am not sure if this is related somehow. Also I am able to communicate with meter sucessfully, Also When i click the "refresh instrument discovery" under the instrument tab, I can see on the meter display that the software is trying to talk to the meter. However it is doesn't show up in the Instruments section.

KickStart is new and already supports models 2450 and 2400.
There are no plugins that you need to install. This is a future capability utility.
Since no plugins exist for you to install and no instructions to install a new plugin were provided, what you attempted to do is not at all recommended.
Reloading a supplied plugin will give you the error you viewed. (fyi -- A problem report to reply with a clearer error message has been filed).

Getting back to your problem...
What is the exact model number of your instrument...is it a model 2400 or 2400-C or 2400-LV?
Can you send me the *idn? response that the instrument is sending?

After you open KickStart and create a new test, when you click on Select Instrument does the Instrument Configuration list ever show your model 2400? If so, did you right-mouse-click on the instrument and select the "Add Instrument" choice?

If you are successfully using your 2400 with LabTracer, what are you looking to do with KickStart?

Yes it seems that KickStart 1.9.0, 1.9.1 and 1.9.2 all have this problem. So no need to troubleshoot your system. It seems KickStart sees the model 2400 but fails to add it to the Instrument Configuration list.
We are building a new version 1.9.3 to correct this problem.
Will work to expedite it's release to the web for download.

Also, you cannot load your own plugins. KickStart releases have all the plugins you need.
That selection will be disabled and eventually removed.

Thanks for your feedback.

I am having the same problem with KickStart 1.9.3.1 version. For connection from my Keithley 2400 model I'm using RS232 cable, which is connected to the computer using a USB convertor (model - AU0002E). All the configurations are made and Ni-Max sees the device. (See the attachment).

Am I missing something? Why doesn't kickstart react to the instrument, it only shows the simulators.

KickStart only supports the use of Model 2400 with a GPIB connection.
You will need a USB-to-GPIB interface (KUSB-488B or equivalent) or a GPIB interface card (KPCI-488LPA or equivalent) to discover the model 2400.

See the General Information section (page 6) of the release notes for a complete list of all models that are supported for each test type, along with the minimum firmware version and the supported communication buses.

Hello:
I just downloaded and installed the latest version of KickStart but having issue using it as it does not recognize attached 2420 Source Meter that is attached via GPIB (I use GPIB to USB adapter: NI GPIB-USB-HS) and properly reporting SN and other information when requesting remotely as evident from Visa Interactive control window. When I click "RefreshInstrumentDiscovery" in KickStart I see 2420 going into remote state, and see TALK being displayed as well confirming that communication is happening. Are there any specific GPIB settings that need to be applied for KickStart to see the 2420 SourceMeter?

At this time KickStart only supports the Model 2400. I will relay your request for additional model support to the team. With each new release of KickStart we are always striving to improve our product.

See the General Information section (page 6) of the release notes for a complete list of all models that are supported for each test type, along with the minimum firmware version and the supported communication buses.

I have Keithley 2400, C26. Does Kickstart 1.9.3 work with this version with this? Or any upcoming software update expected to make this happen?
I have already tried kickstart 1.9.3 with RS-232 and found that it wouldn't work.
For time being is there any ready made LabView application that can be used for solar cell IV measurement with 2400, C26.

Yes, KickStart 1.9.3 does work with the Model 2400.
You need to connect using GPIB (RS-232 is not supported).

The version of Model 2400 that I have is C26. And the Kickstart 1.9.3 notes available - state that the minimum firmware supported is C32.
Is this any problem in this case or it should work fine for me?

I believe that KickStart will not deny a connection to your model 2400 (using GPIB).
Having slightly older firmware C26 will should work, but there are no guarantees using firmware below the recommended minimum. If it works then great, but if you encounter any problem performing tests, then you can upgrade to the lastest version which at the moment is now C34.
