2420 for cyclic voltammetry

Post by jmadhusudan » October 17th, 2012, 8:56 am

Hi,

I have a 2420 Keithley Sourcemeter along with a KUSB-488A usb adapter and I can talk to it through NI LabVIEW.I was wondering if I could use Keithley 2420 for an electrochemical application such as Cyclic Voltammetry (CV).I want to perform CV with a 3-electrode system where the potential between the working electrode and the reference electrode is stepped between, say 0V to 2V and then reverse scanned from 2V to 0V, while the current is monitored between the counter electrode and the working electrode. Do I need to use the 4-wire sensing method to enable me to use the 3-electrode system?

Thanks,
Madhu

I believe it can be done, but not with one 2420. You can create a custom sweep from 0-2V and then 2-0V for your working electrode and you will need another SMU for sensing the counter electrode. 4 wire sensing should not be required. Look into our 26xx series SMU's, as they are two channel per unit.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Unfortunately we have only one 2420 sourcemeter and at present cannot buy a 2600 series one. Is there no way that I can source voltage between two probes and measure current between two other probes using only one 2420 Sourcemeter using the 4-wire sensing mode?

Unfortunately, no it is not possible.
