KickStart 2.0.6 with 2701: several errors and measurement terminated

Post by bergmiis » March 28th, 2019, 7:27 am

I installed KickStart 2.0.6, the 2701 is directly connected to the PC via ethernet (crossover).
The 2701 is not detected automatically, I must always enter the IP address. But I can live with that.

What is really bad: After several minutes of measuring the measurement is terminated. I don't know if the 2701 or KickStart causes the termination. Before the measurement is ended several errors occurred:

Measurement 1
Informational: In order to acheive reliable measurement data, automatic instrument discovery feature is turned OFF. Once the test is complete this feature will be turned ON (28.03.2019 12:01:00)

Error: My 2701: Exception of type 'TekVISANet.TekVISAException' was thrown. (28.03.2019 12:16:19)

Error: My 2701: A communication error has occurred. Check your instrument connection and try again. (28.03.2019 12:16:22)

Error: My 2701: Exception of type 'TekVISANet.TekVISAException' was thrown. (28.03.2019 12:16:25)

Error: My 2701: Exception of type 'TekVISANet.TekVISAException' was thrown. (28.03.2019 12:16:45)

Informational: Automatic instrument discovery feature turned ON. (28.03.2019 12:16:45)

Error: Run button disabled because connection lost with
Instrument: My 2701
Serial number: 1284719 (28.03.2019 12:53:27)

Several errors and in the end the 2701 is „offline“, the measurement ended after 15 minutes, the start and stop buttons are grey. The 2701 had to be switched off and on to be “in use” again.

Measurement 2
Informational: In order to acheive reliable measurement data, automatic instrument discovery feature is turned OFF. Once the test is complete this feature will be turned ON (28.03.2019 13:19:41)

Informational: Automatic instrument discovery feature turned ON. (28.03.2019 13:25:05)

Error: Run button disabled because connection lost with
Instrument: 2701
Serial number: 1284719 (28.03.2019 13:36:38)

Informational: Connection restored with
Instrument: 2701
Serial number: 1284719 (28.03.2019 13:36:40)

Measurement was terminated by the 2701 or KickStart after 5 minutes but the start button could just be pressed and the measurement started again.

What's the reason for the errors? I would really appreciate the measurement to run as Long as I want it to run. After an error it would be great if KickStart would try itself to continue measuring - even if some data got lost.

Hi, and thanks for trying out KickStart. I'm sorry it's not working as intended with your 2701. What version of firmware is your 2701 running?

Also, would you mind sharing your KickStart project? This will help us to reproduce your issue here at HQ. You can email it to

kickstart [at] keithley.com

Thanks again,
Joe

I noticed many of the exceptions are from TekVISA.
The Keithley software such as KickStart will want the NI VISA. When installing, it should install the necessary NI VISA runtime.
But it seems the TekVISA is used for the 2701.
On 64-bit Windows 10, you can have multiple VISA vendors. And the VISA control panels allow you to specify which VISA for certain VISA resources should be used.
