Keithley 228a for battery testing

Post by KBouroumeau » February 21st, 2013, 8:13 am

Hello,
I want to use a Keithley 228A for battery testing purpose.
I want to do this kind of cycle profile :
-Constant current charge, followed by a constant voltage charge;
-the a break;
-Constant current discharge;
-and then a break.

But i am having some kind of difficulty to program this sequence with the help of the manual.

The Model 228A is a full four quadrant power supply.
It does not have a mode to program where it is constant voltage or current.
This may seem confusing.
Actually the Model 228A is a constant voltage source and a constant current source.
The voltage and current parameters along with the load determine whether it is in constant voltage or constant current mode.
For example...
Set to 1V and 1A.
If the load is 10 ohm then the unit is in constant voltage.
If the load is 0.1 ohm then the unit is in constant current.
For a battery it could be like this.
To charge a 1.5V battery, set the 228A to source 2V at the current level you want to charge at.
To discharge he 1.5V battery, set the 228A to source 1V at the current level you want to discharge at.
The Model 228A is an older IEEE-488.1 unit and responds to DDC commands (Device Dependent Commands).
T for trigger
R for range
and so on.
You can find a list of these command in the Model 228A manual.
