How to get measurement data out of Keithley 590 CV analyzer

Post by vadiode » February 21st, 2013, 2:07 pm

I need to measure the capacitance of a device as a function of time with Keithley 590. However, I have a hard time of getting the measurement data out of the equipment. The equipment has an IEEE-488 bus, but the commands are not in SCPI syntax. Furthermore, I cannot find any obvious command that can transfer the data from the equipment to my computer. Although the equipment has a plotter function, that doesn't help (nowadays we use computers rather than plotters...). Can anyone please help? Thanks so much!

The Model 590 is an older IEEE-488.1 instrument and responds to DDC(Device Dependent Commands) commands.
R for range
T for trigger
F for function
and so on.
The B command sets up the buffer and needs to be sent before you ask for data.
You can get data by simply doing a GPIB Talk.
In some languages this is a
IBRD (National Instrument GPIB)
ENTER (CEC 488)
Take a look at section 4, table 4-9 in the manual.
Here is the link.

I am still not sure about the command that transfers the data from the equipment to computer. For example, after I am done with the measurement, I send two commands to define the buffer and data format:

Code: Select all

B1,1,450X
G5X
But I don't know what command I should use next. Can you please give an example code? Thanks!

What GPIB interface and what software are you using to communicate with the Model 590?
What you are looking for is a READ or ENTER command for the GPIB interface or software.
for example in National Instruments in Labview VISA it would be a
VISA READ
Or National Instruments GPIB in Labview would just be
IBRD
There is no Model 590 command to "send" the data.
It is on the side of the GPIB interface. It is addressing the Model 590 to talk.
