Keithley 6517a to computer connection

Post by owenabe1 » June 17th, 2016, 11:26 pm

Can someone please help me figure out what I need to do to enable my 6517a to communicate with my computer. I am extremely new to this and I have no what I'm doing. I inherited the equipment from some older students. BTW I have matlab 2015 and Labview2012 on a windows 7 computer.saving the data from either of these software works fine but. it seems as though the computer is not seeing the 6517a because when i click devices in the matlabDAQ it is not an option.

Here is a crude Labview 2012 program that controls the Model 6517B.
It is written with VISA control which means you could use GPIB or RS-232.
I would recommend using GPIB. As the commands do not have a LF concatenated to them. If you have to use RS-232 then go into the Labview block diagram and concatenate LFs to each command.
This does not do everything you wish but it will get you going.

Good morning
I have to measure I-V readings from KEITHLEY 6517A
How should i connect this model to my laptop?
Which cable should I use?
Which software should I use in my laptop?
How can I read the current and voltage readings from the KEITHLEY 6517A model?
What all hardware is required for me to do this measurement?
Kindly please give me suggesions, it would be a great help for us.
Thank you

Chapter 11 in the 6517B Reference Guide can help.

Your computer will need an interface of the same type as the 6517B. For the 6517B, this means GPIB or RS-232.
GPIB probably easier if you can get an interface compatible with your computer.

- a programming language that you can work in. Python, LabVIEW, VB.NET, whatever.

Use VISA and your programming language to open session, send commands, read responses, close session.

If you can successfully send "*idn?" and read response, you are in good shape to move to next step.

The 6517B has a command set. It is documented in the Reference Guide. Send the necessary commands to configure it for what you want it to do. Then read back the measured values.
