RE: Keithley S46 Switch

Post by [email protected] » January 7th, 2012, 9:12 pm

Hello I am wondering how I can get permissions to post on the RF Switch section.

I would like to find out the noise figure of the switches inside of the S46. This is important because I am trying to determine whether or not measuring noise of a circuit I am working on is feasible. I searched your website and I can't find any document that discusses the noise performance of the S46 system.

Perhaps one would say something like "the noise isn't discussed because the noise can be found from the insertion loss." I think that if this is actually the case, then it should at least be clarified that these switches are passive and there are no active noise sources inside of the switch circuit itself.

Thanks,
John

The Keithley S46 RF switch system is a custom system.
There are no noise specs for one particular system.
Each system has a different configuration.
The specs on the relays that are chosen to be in on particular system would be the closest KI has for this.
Can you tell me which S46 system you have? then I could find our what relays are incorporated and then find some specs.

Dale,
Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how I might be able to find out which S46 I have? There is no more detail of what kind of instrument this is outside of the physical features, the "Keithley S46 Microwave Switch System" markings on the front, and the Relay labels.
Thanks,
John

Two ways to identify the S46 system.
1. Send *IDN? to the unit and get the Model number back.
2. Tell me the number and placement of SPDT relays on the top and the number of SP4T or SP6T relays on the bottom.
Then I can surmise which configuration you have.
The *IDN? is the preferred method. That would tell us if it is an A, B, C or plain version.
The plain,A, B or C versions have different relays in them.

Dale,
OK I sent a *IDN? to the box and it returned:

KEITHLEY INSTRUMENTS INC., MODEL SYSTEM 46, 1035133, A02

Thanks,
John

That serial number should be a Model S46-66661234567.
