Signal generator noise

Post by chronos04 » March 17th, 2015, 1:18 am

Hello,

I would have a question related to a specific requirement we have for a pulse (square signal) generation in terms of noise.

We want to generate a square signal to bias a detector, therefore we need the signal to have very low noise in the high and low levels (i.e. in the flat parts; we will sample the square signal when it is high and low, and the sampled signals should have a noise spectrum below 2e-13 V^2/Hz at 1Hz and above. In terms of square signal frequency, we will work below 100kHz (pulse repetition rate); the amplitude of the square signal should be tunable in the range +- 10V.

Do you think this would be feasible with a waveform generator? Or would you recommend any other way of generating such a signal? Usually signal generators are specified in terms of phase noise or jitter, but this flat part noise is not always given (or cannot always find it).

Thanks a lot for your help!
John

The 2600B family of System Sourcemeters can produce user definable pulses using the trigger model.

The 2600B datasheet gives typical noise specs for each voltage source range.
