Field Adjustment disks for 600B 700A?

Post by BrucePerens » July 21st, 2014, 8:01 pm

Hi,

I have a 684B and a 744A which have had their NVRAM internal battery expire. I am about to replace the NVRAM and the Dallas clock chip in both units. I lack the field adjustment disks to write new parameters into these chips. I wrote Tektronix technical service asking for them, and got a rather odd answer: he said I should do a web search! Really! I've attached his reply below. I have done a web search, and unfortunately did not find them. Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Resolution Description :

Hello Bruce,
Thank you for contacting Tektronix. This software came on a disk in the service manual when the manual was bought. The disk and the manuals are no longer available from Tektronix. I would recommend a web search. We can calibrate and repair these units.
To set up a repair RMA call 1-800-833-9200 opt 2.
Or send an email to [email protected]

Request/Inquiry :

Hello, May I please have a copy of the field adjustment software for TDS684 and TDS744? I have one of each with expired nonvolatile SRAM, once I replace the SRAM I will need the field software to write its contents. Many Thanks Bruce Perens Attachments: null. Attachments:

Hi Bruce,

You should be able to replace the battery backed up NVRAM w/o impacting your calibration which is actually stored on two 24C02 chips (I think it was 02, see the 520B component service manual). The 684B will be a real bear to calibrate, a zillion steps, the 744A not so bad.

Thanks for the information! If I ever wanted to calibrate the scopes, though, I'd be sunk without those disks, wouldn't I? And they seem to have fallen off of the Internet, and the manufacturer refuses to distribute them. This would not happen with HP/Agilent/Foresight. Is it normal for Tek?

15 years or more ago Tek decided to only distribute this software with the service manual. Now if you have access to a fluke/wavetek $50K+ calibrator you probably do have that scopes calibration routine for that calibrator. For manual calibration you need to watch for the service manual with disks on ebay and - it up. You could upload those files to the internet if you chose and be a hero.

Keep in mind that for 500B/600B/700x scopes or later, the calibration is very time consuming. Yes it can be done but expect this end to be your only hobby for a while. But your correct, you don’t even have the option to screw your calibration up w/o that software.

Tek might even get additional calibration opportunities if they did post this software. But it would take someone with real torque in management to make that call.

Sorry, i can´t help, but I have the same problem.

I am new in this group and I will start with a problem concerning my
TDS744A-scope.

Since about half a year my Tektronix TDS744A does not start. When pressing
the ON/Start-Button, several Segments on the 7-Segment display inside the
scope on the Controller-board light up until the changing of the segments
stops and the scope is frozen. This procedure has to be started several
times and after 3 or 4 Trials, the scope boots up.

The calibration and date is lost and I have to run a calibration routine
(SPC) and set the date.

After this procedure the scope works fine.

When I switch the scope OFF/Stand by, I can start it within a certain time (1 or 2
hours) without problems. Calibration and date are correct. Starting after a
longer period of time, the procedure is as described before.

I have desoldered the NVRAM (DS1650) and WD-Timekeeper (DS1486) and I have
added sockets on the corresponding places for comfortable changing the IC`s.

I have bought several 1650 and 1486 by ebay for replacement, but I was not
successful.

I tested the storability of the data of several IC`s with a MiniProTL866A
and I found them keeping the data over several days.

In different blogs I found that there has to be loaded special data on the
NVRAM as on the WD-Timer. But I didn`t find any programs to be loaded.

Is there anyone who had experience in this problem and can give help.

I would be happy, when my scope would work again and hope for good advices.

Regards

As I recall, each TDS series (600, 700) used, regardless of letter version, one version of field service software which covered the entire series within the hundreds range (as in the 600 software would do any TDS600 series 'scope).

I have what I believe are all the field adjustment software packages, plus some other goodies, on my FTP site at:

ftp://ftp.bluefeathertech.com/electroni ... x/software

Happy hunting.

Thanks for the alert. It seems the VM didn't restart following a power outage/restore. Don't know why, but it should be back up now.
