Adding a GPS receiver to your counters

Post by tmiller11147 » October 25th, 2010, 8:58 pm

Has Tek ever thought of designing in a GPS receiver to disipline the OCXO reference in your counters? It would be a new feature that I am not aware anyone else has. I don't think it would take much effort to do this. There are several very good COTS receivers available that can do this and at not much cost.

Regards,
Tom

Check out Stanford Research. They and Fluke I think have GPS disciplined osc.

I was not too clear on what I was saying. Nothing new. :)

Anyway, what I meant was to include the GPS receiver inside the counter. You would connect an external antenna if needed. This would give NIST tracable clocking inherent in the counter. To my knowledge, no one has that.

If we added a GPS receiver, how many would you buy?

It of course is nice to have an accurate timebase for a frequency counter. However, I think it makes more sense to have an stand alone 10 MHz reference oscillator. In my home lab of 350 instruments, I have two dozen counters, RF gens, synthesizers, etc with external ref inputs. I have a rubidium oscillator and several HP 10811's. Brooks Sherra has a nice article on a GPS locked reference you can build.
One of my current projects is a distribution amplifier.

I'm also not sure it's a good selling point :-)

Sure - if you only need one instrument with 'perfect' accuracy then it's probably fine - but then you're only buying one instrument.

In a lab setup - you are much more likely want everyone using the same reference.

Give a man a clock and he 'KNOWS' what time it is - give a man two clocks and he can never be sure

I still think this is a good suggestion.

I agree, a gps would be a great addition. Tek guys should put a poll on the forum, hopefully if many of us want this, it'll be cheaper in the end! :)

I can see it becoming a 3rd-party solution (one-off) from a Tek alliance partner, if not addressed directly by Tek.

i cannot do anything about feature requests posted in the forums.

no one is discussing a solution. :(
