3390 USB Remote Control

I am trying to remotely control my 3390 via USB. Is there another set of commands for USB communications or should the SCPI commands work. I have connected to the 3390 but it complains about errors with the commands.

What software are you using to send the SCPI commands? Labview? VB, etc.
I would imagine you have VISA to be able to control USB.
Let me know.

I want to configure the device directly. I just want to know if the commands are the same and/or should they work. If not, can I get the USB commands for direct USB communications.

The unit responds to SCPI Commands.
You need some type of software to send the commands and read the data.
Labview, VB and MATLAB are popular languages for this.

The 3390 unit is USBTMC (USB Test & Measurement Class Device). This is a protocol which is built on top of USB that allows GPIB-like communication with USB devices. Thus you can talk to your 3390 as if it was connected via GPIB using the full SCPI command set as defined in the 3390 user manual.

To talk to your USBTMC intrument you will first need to install NI-VISA (if you download and install the latest Keithley I/O Layer you will get NI-VISA runtime). Use this search to find the KIOL assets on the Keithley website:

After VISA is installed, connect your 3390 instrument and allow windows to automatically detect (or manually by using the new hardware wizard) to add a new USB Test & Measurement Class Device driver. This new USB Test & Measurement device will appear in your Device Manager under the heading USB Test & Measusrement Devices.

To talk to the 3390 with VISA, use VISA resource name USB0::0x5E6::0x3390::nnnnnnnn::INSTR (where nnnnnnnn is the serial number of your instrument). Now, you can talk to your 3390 in any langauge as you would a GPIB device using VISA Write and VISA Read commands.

I cannot see where to set the power limit, and have not found this in the manual, which would be a better way than reducing either the voltage or current limits. The datasheet explicitly states that the power limit *can* be set, but if you can tell me how, it would be most helpful.

The Model 3390 has no "power limit" feature or control.
The load impedance can be set to 50 ohms or HI Z.
Myave that is what the data sheet is referring to.
Voltage amplitude is limited to 10Vp-p at 50 ohms.
Voltage amplitude is limited to 20Vp-p at HI Z.
