2306 in solar power application

We want to use the 2306 in the following application. A solar panel (max 8V, 1.2A) is connected to a charger. The carger is a software controlled device designed to charge NiMH, LifePO4 and supercap devices with nominal voltages of 2.8V ... 3.6V, charge current limitted to 2A and do some energy harvesting in cases of very low solar power output (solar power voltage output ca. 0.9V)

Can we use the 2306 to simulate the solar output and in the mean time simulate the different battery times in order to test the perfomance of our charger in terms of efficientcy, stability and life cycle of the battery? Primary purpose is to set the software parameters of the charger and the maximum power tracking algorithm for the differtent battery types. How should we make the proper connections between the 2306 and the charger?

Can the 2306 be "programmed" to test our charger in a semi automated production environment in terms of pass/fail testing?

Hello Kris,

From the information that you have given I'm pretty sure that you will be able to characterize your charger using the 2306. You should use Channel 1 of the 2306 as your "battery simulator", and connect to the charger via the green connector on the back using 4 wires (Source+ and Sense+ connected to the +ve output of the charger, and Source- and Sense- connected to the 0v of the charger).

In your example, set the 2306 current limit to 2A, and set the output voltage to +0.9V.

The 2306 can be programmed via the GPIB bus interface (IEEE 488) from a PC, with test results being passed back to the PC whereby Pass/Fail conditions can be calculated.
