LabView "Error 7" "Board Missing" error

Thought this might be a timesaver for anyone using a Keithley instrument and having trouble talking to it from LabView through an Agilent GPIB interface.

PROBLEM:
Cannot communicate with any instrument via LabView and an Agilent GPIB interface. This case example was using an Agilent GPIB interface and LabView software to communicate with the Keithley 2182. Labview was giving the error, “Error 7” with something about “Board Missing”.

This error means that LabView cannot locate the GPIB interface “board”. Whether it is a board or a USB device, it refers to any GPIB interface. The reason is that the Agilent GPIB device is not being recognized by LabView's Passports. It is not because of any instrument or GPIB device malfunction. This is because the NI software needs to enable communication with Agilent's software.

SOLUTION:
We discovered that by using Agilent’s interactive IO Control dialogs, we were able to identify the 2182 on the bus using their driver software and interface device, showing that the instrument and GPIB interface were functional. LabView and the National Instruments software needed to have the “Tulip passport” enabled in order to communicate with an Agilent interface device.

In the current version of NI software, open Start Menu -> All Programs -> National Instruments -> Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). From there, you will see a tree of system settings. Select My System -> Software -> NI-VISA N.N.N In the window to the right, look under General Settings -> Passports. Make sure the checkbox next to NiVisaTulip.dll is checked. Select File -> Save All, then restart MAX.

This should correct the problem.
