KUSB-488B & 2182 NANOVOLTMETER

Post by brayday01 » December 5th, 2012, 4:56 pm

We recently lost connection to our 2182 via the KUSB-488B. We have been using LabVIEW to record data on the change in voltage with increasing temperature. The system was working perfectly until we disconnected the 488B and reconnected it. Immediately thereafter, we started getting the following error in LabVIEW:

Error - 1073807265 occurred at VISA Read in Instance 1 11Resistivityt.vi->Resistivity.vi

Possible Reason(s):

VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF005F) No listeners condition is detected (both NRFD and NDAC are deasserted).

I uninstalled the driver and installed an updated version (KI-488_Driver_Version_3.12/NI Command Compatible Driver). We have checked the connection numerous times, disconnecting and reconnecting the unit. When I open the Keithly GPIB Configuration Utility, sometimes I only see the GPIB0. Currently, I see the GPIB0 with 2 devices listed beneath it, both of which show "|(PA:255, SA:255). I just refreshed it and it has changed to do^ (PA:255, SA:255). I checked the settings on my 2182 for GPIB and they are as follows:

GPIB: ON
LANG: 182
ADDR: 07

In the Keithley GPIB Configuration Utility, my settings are as follows:

GPIB Interface: GPIB0
GPIB Address:
Primary: 0
Secondary: None

GPIB Bus Setting:
Bus timing: 500ns
I/O timeout: 10s

System controller and Auto polling checked, Re-addressing unchecked.

I have also tried to change the primary GPIB Address to 7 without avail. From other posts, I found that I had multiple files named ieee_32m.dll, so I deleted the one not in C:\Program Files\Keithley Instruments\KI-488\Utility\.

Lastly, the Ready light is lit on the 488B, but the Active light is not.

Please help. What are the next steps I should take to get my system up and running?

Thanks,

Steven

1. Are you using the Model 182 language mode of the SPCI mode of the Model 2182?
In your Labview VI do you send commands like T1X or :TRIG:SOURCE EXT?
T1X is for Model 182 language mode.
:TRIG:SOURCE EXT is for SCPI mode.

2. When you install the driver for the KUSB-488B do you choose Keithley or National compatibility?
Since you use Labview I would recommend you choose NI compatibility.

3. Can you communicate through the KUSB-488B and the KI-488 Diagnostic tool?
START
ALL PROGRAMS
Keithley Instruments
KI-488
KI-488 Diagnostic Tool

Just try to send *IDN? and get the identification codes back.
That will at least tell you if the KUSB-488B, driver and 2182 are operational.

Hi.. I have a CCR resistance measurement system With Lake shore temperature controller, Keithley 6221 current source and 2182A nano voltmeter. I dont know any thing about how to interface the system with pc to get "Resistance V/s temperature" data. Presently I am noting the values manually in delta mode triggered using 6221 source. Please let me know how can I do it using Labview. Please share the ".vi" file or block diagram of the circuit and needed drivers for the interface establishment. Please help me., my research is lagging behind because of this reason..

I would recommend to use the 6220 demo software. That would help.
I mentioned this on another post you made earlier. Try that.
Did you try any of the suggestions I made in the last post?
If so, how did that work out?

Hi Dale. Thanks for your replay. Actually I had problem in my NI. It was not detecting the drivers. Now it is detecting the drivers. I have made every settings mentioned in earlier posts. Now the driver is detecting in NI but the 6220 demo software is not at all detecting the devices. I have installed every drivers required. Do you thing some problem is there in my pc? It is a good configuration PC with 2GB RAM.

This should work with NI GPIB cards.
Here is a link to the release notes.
Maybe they will tell us something.

Dale,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. I have been out of pocket for a bit.

Here are the answers to your questions:

I am new to Labview and uncertain as to which language is in use. The program was already developed when I began the testing. How could I go about getting this information?

2. When you install the driver for the KUSB-488B do you choose Keithley or National compatibility?
Since you use Labview I would recommend you choose NI compatibility.

I chose NI compatibility.

I repeatedly get the error 8=timeout when trying to communicate with the KI-488 Diagnostic Tool using *IDN?

I am using Instrument Address = 07 and the default board address of 21. I click Initialize KI GPIB, type *IDN? in the GPIB Command String to Send or Transmit, then I click Send.

This leads me to believe the issue is on the Keithley side. Please let me know the next steps.

to set for SCPI and not 182 mode use the following steps.

1. On the 2182A press SHIFT, let go and then press GPIB(DIGITS).
2. Select GPIB ON, press ENTER.
3. Select appropriate address. Press ENTER.
4. Select LANG SCPI, press ENTER.

Now try to communicate with the 2182A.

Dale,

I am still getting 8=timeout with Lang: SCPI. To ensure all went well with the driver, I disconnected the KUSB-488B from the PC, set the 2182 to SCPI, uninstalled the driver, rebooted the machine, installed the driver, rebooted the machine, plugged in the KUSB-488B, went through the found new hardware prompt twice, all seemed successful.

I then go to the Keithley GPIB Configuration Utility, and I see GPIB0 with no +/- sign as if there is nothing attached there. KI-488 Diagnostic Tool still presents 8=timeout when initializing Instrument Address = 07 and Board Address = 21 sending *IDN? I tried another IEEE 488 cable to rule that out. The IEEE 488 cable made no difference. Any further suggestions?

Thanks,

Steven

Might be a service issue with the KUSB-488B.
Do you have any other GPIB devices to test? This would eliminate the 2182A as the problem.

Dale,

As discussed, I tried to use a different Keithley meter with the KUSB-488B. I used a Keithley 2400 SourceMeter and the problem persisted. I then took the SourceMeter and the KUSB-488B to a different computer. Still 8=timeout when sending *IDN?. I am currently trying to get a hold of another KUSB-488B so that we can verify with 100% certainty that this is the faulty piece of equipment. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

Steven Bray
