My final question is how to set up the test fixture and the 6517A to perform the Alternating Polarity method:
This is what I performed:
3. "MEAS-TYPE" then selected "RESISTANCE"
10. Set the voltage offset to 0 v.
11. Set the alternating voltage to 100 v.
12. Set the measurement time to 30 seconds.
13. Set the amount of reading to discard to 3.
14. Set the number of reading to store 8.
15. <EXIT>, <EXIT>, EXIT>.

It defaults on the +/-100V source range. You must enable the +/- 1000V range.
Push the Config button, then the OPER button. I believe there should be a range item in that menu. Hit enter and using the arrow keys, select +/- 1000V and hit enter. Exit out to the main screen and you should now have the ability to go up to 1000V.
Underflow means that the signal is too low for your measurement range. This is helped by using a higher sourced Voltage or a lower measure range.
The alternating polarity method that I tried did not work. Can you provide me with a method or sequence of keys to imput to so that I use that Alternating Polarity test.
In the mean while I will try your suggestion.
