4404 computer repair info needed

Post by old_68k » December 15th, 2009, 2:52 pm

Does anyone know of a source for service manuals for a
Tek 4404 computer (runs Small Talk) was build in the
mid 80's. Or at least the meaning of the LEDs on the
processor board. Mine has no cursor and seems stuck
some where in the early boot process. Close to the 4405
and 4406 ?

Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I've been looking for somebody else with a Tektronix 4404 for *years*! I bought 2 from college when I left (called Tom & Jerry) and have a bunch of manuals for them. I think they're mostly bog standard unix/lisp/smalltalk docs though. Was there a specific title you were looking for?

The HD will no longer spin up when I power it up. It almost gets to operating speed judging by the sound, but then cuts out and spins back down. :-(

Hi Adam,

sorry for the long delay. I just happened to look back at this.

I do have a working one with a bad HD also. Did you ever get
any OS media on floppy or a set of back up disks ???

The hard drives are famous for spin-up and then spin down. One
cause is the rubber bumpers on the head stops turning to mush and
then holds the head from moving. This can be repaired.
